Day 14

03 November 2023

Today was cold, breezy and very damp due to the recent heavy rain.

It was warm in the sun.

ENTRANCE AREA

On the entrance path, I spotted some Laccaria amethystina.

THE ZEN ZONE

At the entrance to the Zen Zone, the Mutinus caninus from previous weeks had diminished and I found a solitary Paxillus involutus (Fig. 14.0).

The Hebeloma crustuliniforme from Day 13 were still around.

BASECAMP AREA

On the Basecamp Loop, the Tubifera ferruginosa from Day 13 had turned black.

On another mossy log, I found a Pluteus cervinus (Fig. 14.1).

Around the logs at Basecamp, I found some Parasola conopilea and a group of unidentified slimy white bracket fungi (Fig. 14.2).

There were also a few large groups of Coprinellus micaceus (Fig. 14.3).

Behind the activity tent, I spotted some orange fungi on mossy, rotting logs (Fig. 14.4).

I spotted some Agaricus moelleri in the area left of the Basecamp railway path (Fig. 14.5).

The Stereum hirsutum was still around.

THE DELL

In The Dell, I found lots of Phleogena faginea (Fig. 14.6) and the remains of the Gaestrum triplex  from Day 13.

The Hebeloma crustuliniforme from Day 13, the Helvella dissingii from Day 12 and Rutstroemia firma from previous weeks were still around.

SANDY GLADE AREA

On the Fen Pond path, I saw more Ramaria stricta (Fig. 14.7).

By the Fen Trail Turnoff path, I found a singular Lepista nuda (Fig. 14.8).

ENCLOSED AREA

I found an odd looking Leota lubrica (Fig. 14.9) on the leaf litter.

The Clavulina coralloides and Ascocoryne sarcoides were still around.

The Typhula juncea group from Day 13 had diminished.

YEW GROVE AREA

In the area opposite the Yew Grove, I noted the Auricularia auricula from Day 12.

OUTPOST AREA

I spotted a small group of Trichia varia on the fallen trunk where I found the Pluteus aurantiorugosus from Day 9.

On the right of the path just before The Outpost, I found a group of the anamorphic form of Ascocoryne sarcoides (Fig. 14.10) on a birch stump; left of the path just past The Outpost, I found an Amanita species (Fig. 14.11).

In The Outpost itself, the Bulgaria inquinans was still around and I saw some Exidia glandulosa (Fig. 14.12).

TRAIL END AREA

Along from The Outpost, I found a few Typhula fistulosa.

The Apioperdon pyriforme had grown larger.

Near the end of the trail, growing off the bottom of a large fallen trunk, I spotted a group of small grey fruiting bodies (Fig. 14.13).

OTHER

All over the reserve woodland, I saw large groups of Coprinellus micaceus — particularly around the Basecamp log circle.

I also found lots of tiny white brackets (some of which were Phlebia tremellosa) in groups on fallen branches – e.g. Figs. 14.14 & 14.15 – and lots of white and yellow groups of Trichia varia (Fig. 14.16).
