Pluteus umbrosus

LOCATION:

The Enclosed Area

DATE FOUND:

Day 15 – 11 November 2023

I spotted this weird fungus on a mossy stump by a drainage ditch in the Enclosed Area.

At first, it looked like a morel, with an irregular, black cap and dark, greyish stem.

Morels (Morchella and Verpa species) fruit in Spring, so this is unlikely.

EDIT 19/10/25

I’ve identified this as a juvenile Pluteus umbrosus, after seeing one at a fungi foray.

This would explain its distinctive wrinkly cap, which had not yet expanded.
